That time Popeye and Wilco made a video together

This week’s pick for Video of the Week centers around a song from Wilco’s 2011 album The Whole Love: “Dawned on Me.” The following is an excerpt from the upcoming book, Wilcopedia: A Comprehensive Guide to the Music of America’s Beast Band (releasing 9/17; pre-order here).

Although “Dawned on Me” starts off with some wailing feedback, the fourth track on Wilco’s eighth studio recording is one of the poppiest in their canon.

Its infectious catchiness made the song a perfect fit for an animated video that had a cartoon version of Wilco interacting with classic characters from Kings Feature’s Popeye

The video, which was a co-production of Wilco’s label dBpm Records and King Features, was directed by Darren Romanelli with long-time Popeye cartoonist Frank Caruso acting as art director. The video debuted online on January 27th, 2012.

In a 2012 interview with Tweedy on the Nerdist podcast, host Chris Hardwick described a bit of the video: “Jeff Tweedy totally cock blocks Popeye with Olive Oyl.” Tweedy responded, “My wife hates it because of that. Like, why do you get Olive Oyl?’ Spoiler alert! She thinks that that’s ridiculous. Popeye deserves Olive Oyl.

Before the video dropped, days earlier on January 22, 2012, a comic by Frank Caruso and Ned Sontagg made the rounds:
