Gorman Bechard's Jay Bennett Documentary Premieres Tonight In Chicago

Tonight, the World Premiere of Gorman Bechard’s WHERE ARE YOU, JAY BENNETT? will go down in Chicago, Illinois, at the David Theater. As Wilco fans know, Bennett was involved with the band during a very crucial  era. The documentary will likely do deep on the stretch of albums that Bennett made with Wilco from 1996-2001.

Filmmaker Bechard puts it like this, “If you love Being There, Mermaid Avenue, Summerteeth, and/or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, this is a film that will captivate you, and fill in the blanks about a great musician who’s truly a part of your musical life.”

Bechard had help releasing his Bennett project via a Kickstarter campaign.140 backers stepped up to pitch in to reach the final funding goal and then some.

As a long-time fan that came in on the groundfloor, Bennett had always been seen as an essential member of the band, close to an equal partner as he was doing a lot of writing and engineering. As Bennett’s story was told in another documentary WILCO; I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART, a few books, scores of blog posts and magazine articles, it will be extremely interesting to see what Bechard’s film brings to the table.

Watch the trailer for WHERE ARE YOU, JAY BENNETT? here.

I wish I could be in Chicago to see Bechard’s obvious love and on the big screen too. Like many, I’ll have to wait for the DVD or whatever streaming service may offer it. I’ll have to settle for seeing the doc another place/another time.

Oh, and while we’re on the subject, check out Bechard’s website, whatwerewethinkingfilms.com, for info for not only the Bennett film, buts his vast array of other works including docs on the Replacements, Sarah Shook, Archers of Loaf, Lydia Loveless, and Grant Hart. Bechard has also made many dramatized movies such as PSYCHOS IN LOVE, THE KISS, FRIENDS (WITH BENEFITS), and BROKEN SIDE OF TIME among them.

The site, also gives access to music videos, and short films produced by the fiercely independent filmmaker.

The Finish Line For Wilco's Fall Tour Approaches - Here's The Latest Setlist Stats

Designed by Justin Froning/Housebear Design

Hey folks, yet again I’ve got a slew of Wilco setlists as their Fall tour is coming to an end. As I’ve talked about repeatedly, many fans have bitched at the similarity of the setlists, and the fact that this is supposed to be the Ode to Joy tour, in which their last album gets the focus that it lost when the pandemic stole their 2020 jaunt’s thunder, but they are only playing a few songs from the record at every show.

That’s fine by me as I saw a concert in 2019 that featured a lot of Ode to Joy. Also, they have mixed it up more than they have been given credit for as older tunes have been popping up regularly. So, as I’ve got five setlists to sum up - let’s get right to the the last shows for Jeff Tweedy and Company of 2021.

A Slew Of Wilco Setlists: 10/9-10/13

Another stretch of shows from Wilco's current tour that has kept a steady, if all too familiar, setlist going to the chagrin of some fans. But it should be noted that Jeff & Company have been mining their back catalog for some fan favorites, and, most surprising, a cover of a classic Beatles song made the mix. Reason:

“A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “Side with the Seeds” / “One and a Half Stars” / “War on War” / “How to Fight Loneliness” / “Sunken Treasure” / “Laminated Cat” / “If I Ever Was A Child” / “Impossible Germany” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Forget the Flowers”/ “Hummingbird” / “Box Full of Letters” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned On Me” / “Jesus, Etc.” / “I Got You (At the End of the Century” / “California Stars” / “Poor Places” / “Reservations”

Encore: “Ashes of American Flags” / “The Late Greats” / “Outtasite (Outta Mind)”

Mount Baker Theatre, Bellingham, WA 10/10/21

“Bright Leaves” / “A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “At Least That’s What You Said” / “One and a Half Stars” / “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” / “Art of Almost” / “How to Fight Loneliness” / “Far, Far Away” / “Laminated Cat” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Impossible Germany” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Forget the Flowers” / “Hummingbird” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned on Me” / “Jesus Etc.” / “Theologians” / “California Stars” / “Poor Places” / “Reservations” / “The Late Greats” / “Heavy Metal Drummer” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You”

Parmount Theatre, Seattle, WA 10/12/21

“Bright Leaves” / “A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “Side With the Seeds” / “One and a Half Stars” / “War on War” / “One Wing” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Via Chicago” / “Bull Black Nova” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Impossible Germany” / “Hummingbird” / “Box Full of Letters” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned on Me” / “Jesus, Etc.” / “Hate it Here” / “Heavy Metal Drummer” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “Poor Places” / “Reservations”

Encore: “Red-Eyed and Blue” / “I Got You (At the End of the Century” / “Outtasite (Outta Mind)

Paramount Theatre, Seattle, WA 10/13/21

“Bright Leaves” / “A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “At Least That’s What You Said” / “One and a Half Stars” / “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” / “Art of Almost” / “How to Fight Loneliness” / “Sunken Treasure” / “Laminated Cat” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Impossible Germany” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Forget the Flowers”/ “Hummingbird” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned on Me” / “Jesus, Etc.” / “Theologians” / “California Stars” / “Poor Places” / “Reservations”

That's right, Wilco was joined during the encore by the Seattle alt. rock band, The Fresh Young Fellows for a rousing cover of the Beatles classic, “Helter Skelter.” Watch it below:

Wilco Setlists: Des Moines 9/16, Ashwaubenon 9/17, & Welch 9/18

Official show poster by Nick Van Berkum

Here are three more setlists from Wilco’s current tour, which apparently is no longer the “It’s Time” tour, and is made up of a handful of shows under no name. However, in early October, the excursion will be dubbed the “Ode to Joy” tour. This is because the original “Ode” excursion was cut short by the pandemic. In the meantime, we’ve got here three gigs with no “Ode” tunes and a roster of songs that are familiar to those following these concerts.

But I’m sure fans were happy with the tour debut “Forget the Flowers,” which was performed at all three of the shows below. Since Wilco only played one song from their second album Being There (1996), the rave-up “Outtasite (Outta Mind),” it’s great that another has popped up, especially since setlist.fm noted that it contains “electric interludes.” It’s also nice to see “Bull Black Nova” getting a few more airings.

Okay, so let’s get down to the last trio of shows of this brief leg, in which Minnesotan bluegrass band, Trampled by Turtles, opened:

Lauridsen Amphitheater at Water Works Park, Des Moines, IA 9/16/21

Next up, Wilco returns on October 5 for the ostensible “Ode” tour, which, with hope, will actually feature more “Ode” songs. We shall wait and see.

The Tweedy Show Returns Tonight For Its 201st Episode

The Tweedy Show, the quarantine-inspired Instagram series featuring the musical antics of Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy’s family, is returning tonight at 9pm CST for its 201st episode. Episode 200 aired just over a month ago on July 29th as Wilco was setting out on the “It’s Time” tour performing live for the first time since March 2020, which of course, is when the pandemic hit hard.

The Tweedy Shows premiere episode, which aired on March 19, 2020, appears to be missing online, but almost every other of the 200 episodes can be found on YouTube. I haven’t seen every one of them, but what I have seen are a lot of fun. Susie shoots the show with her phone, never appearing on camera as she captures her husband Jeff, and sons Spencer and Sammy playing a choice assortment of heartfelt covers and Wilco songs.

The family hanging out vibe is largely represented as well. Lots of joking and reminiscing, augmented by comments from fans (who are referred to as “clients”) mostly making requests. Family friends like comic actor Jeff Garlin made appearances via Zoom (I think, not completely sure), Spencer’s girlfriend, Casey Walker, pops up in person to sing some of her songs, and maybe most importantly there was a mini-Wilco reunion with drummer Glenn Kotche and John Stirratt stopping by the Tweedy home to perform several fan favorites and debut a new Wilco tune, “Hints.”

A few months later, Kotche came back this time with multi-instrumentalist Pan Sansone for another mini-reunion to lay down around round of well-loved tuneage.

The announcement of tonight’s episode was a pleasant surprise as a lot of fans, myself included, thought the series might be over what with Wilco’s tour schedule, but since the band is on a nearly two week break, why not get the show back together?

So tonight, I’m looking forward to hearing the lively intro-music, old school announcer, and seeing the cartoon versions of the Tweedy family appearing on their jukebox screen. Whether or not they’ll be any song surprises, I bet it’ll be a splendid hour to take in right to the end that will surely be capped off by the traditional Tweedy Show closer, Roger Miller’s “Reincarnation.”

Wilco Setlist: Wonderbus Festival, Columbus, Ohio 8/29/21

With the “It’s Time” tour behind them, Wilco is hitting the festival circuit for a chunk of September. They’ll hit Summerfest in Milwaukee, the Black Dirt Music Festival in Bloomington, and the Moon River Festival in Chattanooga. Then they’ll play a bunch of shows with opening acts including Faye Webster, Trampled by Turtles, and Young Fresh Fellows.

Last night, Jeff Tweedy and company performed at The Lawn at CAS at the Wonderbus Festival in Columbus, Ohio. Again, it’s not a surprising set, but still one that I think many a fan would find satisfying.

Here’s what Wilco at Wonderbus laid down:

“A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “Side with the Seeds” / “Via Chicago” / “Art of Almost” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Impossible Germany” / “Hummingbird” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “You Are My Face” / “Box Full of Letters” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned on Me” / “Jesus, Etc.” / “Theologians” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “Heavy Metal Drummer” / “I’m Always in Love” / “The Late Greats” / “Outtasite (Outta Mind)”

Next up, after a nearly two week break, Wilco will return to the aforementioned Summerfest in Milwaukee on September 10th.

Wilco’s Homecoming In Chicago Features Sleater-Kinney’s Last Show On The Tour

Last night’s “It’s Time” tour show was a homecoming in Chicago at the Millennium Park Pritzker Pavilion with Wilco, and supporting acts NNAMDÏ and Sleater-Kinney, pumping the audience up with their audio hijinks (sorry, I’ll never say ‘audio hijinks’ again).

The concert (Sleater-Kinney and Wilco’s sets) was live streamed on nug.net, so many were able to join in on the experience, which was notable as it was Sleater-Kinney’s last performance on the tour. I was happy to see one of the 16 shows that they played. They are a perfect opening band for Wilco, as they have a body of strong songs and are a blast to watch bounce around the stage.

Guitarist/singer Carrie Brownstein addressed this early in their set:

“This is our last night of tour with and Wilco and we have to say we’re quite sad to end it but what we have been so happy about, and what has been truly a joy is getting to play live music again. For how many of you, is this your first show back? Well, on behalf of all three bands, we want to say thank you. We have missed this as performers, we miss it as fans – just this ability to communicate and commune with all of you in moments that are spontaneous and extemporized. So thank you for being a part of it tonight in Chicago.”

I haven’t covered every set by Sleater-Kinney, but since this is their last on this tour, here’s how they ended this excursion:

“High in the Grass” / “Hurry On Home” / “Price Tag” / “Down the Line” / “Jumpers” / “Shadow Town” / “Can I Go On” / “What’s Mine is Yours” / “Path of Wellness” / “A New Wave” / “Method”/ “Complex Female Characters” / “Surface Envy” / “Modern Girl” / “Bring Mercy” / “The Fox” / “Worry With You” / “One Beat” * / “Entertain”

Brownstein’s comedy co-star on the IFC program Portlandia, Feed Armisen, helped out on tambourine during “One Beat.” The former SNL performer is also well known to Wilco fans for his appearance in the doc I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART, and also because in the ‘90s he used to work at Chicago’s legendary Lounge Ax, which was co-owned by Jeff Tweedy’s wife, Sue Miller.

After S/K’s set, Wilco took the stage around 8:30pm, and struck up their consistent opener “A Shot in the Arm” but with the help of Brownstein, and Corin Tucker who provided back-up vocals and some awkward half-dancing on the side.

Tweedy appeared to not be very talkative at this show, but did tell the audience at one point: “We missed you. We missed this, we missed that.” He also paid thanks to what he called “an amazing crew,” saying “my amplifier blew up at 2 o’clock today and it’s fixed. That’s amazing! So if you have any amplifiers that need to be fixed, just drop ‘em off at the bottom of the stage here.”

So here’s the meat of the matter:

“A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “At least That’s What You Said” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Via Chicago” / “Art of Almost” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Impossible Germany” / “Hummingbird”/ “Box Full of Letters” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned on Me” / “Jesus, Etc.” / “Theologians” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “Heavy Metal Drummer” / “I’m Always in Love”

Encore: “The Late Greats” / “Outtasite (Outta Mind)”

Next up, the Wonderbus Festival in Columbus, Ohio.

Wilco Setlist: Leader Bank Pavilion, Boston, MA 8/24/21

Official show poster by Dan Black/Landland

Like all of the shows on the “Its Time” tour, Wilco's concert in Boston, MA, last night stood out for a very special reason. Tweedy and company including Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker broke out a cover of The Rolling Stones classic “Honky Tonk Women” in tribute to Stones drummer Charlie Watts who passed away early that day at the age of 80.

The Stones music is certainly part of Wilco's DNA as they've previously covered “Dead Flowers,” and have several songs, particularly on their first few albums, A.M. and Being There, that owe greatly to the tunes of Englands Oldest Hitmakers.

Check out Wilco's rendition of “Honky Tonk Women”:

“A Shot in the Arm”

“Random Name Generator”

“At Least That’s What You Said”

“Love Is Everywhere (Beware)”

“I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”

“Art of Almost”

“If I Ever Was a Child”

“Impossible Germany”

“Hummingbird”

“Box Full of Letters”

“Everyone Hides”

“Born Alone”

“Jesus, Etc.”

“Theologians”

“I’m the Man Who Loves You”

“Heavy Metal Drummer”

“I’m Always in Love”

“Honky Tonk Women”

“The Late Greats”

“California Stars”

Review & Setlist: Wilco @ Asheville, NC 8/19/21

“Asheville, finally!” Jeff Tweedy remarked early into Wilco’s show at the odd venue, Salvage Station, last night. Tweedy was referring to this event being originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 17, but Tropical Storm Fred had other ideas.

Despite a hard rain shower in the afternoon, the skies were largely clear by the time the doors opened at 5pm, and thankfully rain-free for the rest of the evening. A repurposed junkyard, Salvage Station, with its gravel-based grounds, was definitely the least fancy, most grotty locale where I’ve ever seen Wilco perform. Don’t get me wrong, it was a cool place to see a show, and had a nice assortment of food trucks and booze booths around a circular walkway.

At 6pm, Wilco’s first opening act, NNAMDÏ (formerly known as Nnamdi Ogbonnaya), took the stage with his backing band, and preceded to win over the audience with his melodic blend of hip-hop, reggae, and jazz.

NNAMDÏ hails from Chicago, but while being in Wilco’s orbit was a factor in his addition to this tour, I bet it was more because he’s a masterful multi-instrumentalist with a bounty of solid songs. I must explore this artist further.

Next up, Sleater-Kinney, a band I’ve highly enjoy through their albums and a few live shows through the years. Fronted by guitarists/vocalists Carrie Brownstein, and Corin Tucker, the group tore through a full set of punk thrashers mostly from their latest album, Path of Wellness (which I have to pick up). To say that Sleater-Kinney was well received would be an understatement as I witnessed a crowd full of frantically dancing, and pogoing gig-goers.

Now onto the meat of the matter: Wilco’s headlining set, which began at 8:30pm. Like all the previous concerts on the “It’s Time” tour, they opened with “A Shot in the Arm” from their classic third album, Summerteeth. Despite its origin in the late ‘90s, the song is timelier than ever for obvious reasons. It was a great, rich tune to kick off their set, and was followed by a just as lush rendition of a newer song, “Random Name Generator” from 2015’s Star Wars.

While fans have complained about the sameness of the setlists on this excursion, the third selection is one that they’ve mixed it up – at least a little with “Side with the Seeds” rotating with “At Least That’s What You Said.”
This show featured an intense stomping version of the latter, and I was more than fine with that as I prefer “At Least” to “Side.”

Wilco’s most recent record, Ode to Joy, was touched upon throughout the show with the understated yet touchingly tuneful tracks “One and a Half Stars,” “Love is Everywhere,” and “Everyone Hides.” As I’ve noted here before, Wilco’s landmark 2002 album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, is getting as much, or some nights more of a spotlight than 2019’s Ode, which may be a case of giving the people what they want.

A regular highlight of Wilco’s performances, the Sky Blue Sky epic staple “Impossible Germany,” was given a blazing workout by lead guitarist Nels Cline, who is delightful to watch shredding up a storm that entranced the collective crowd. If anything was worth the four-hour drive to Asheville, it was this.

It was also a lot fun to watch Pat Sansone do his switching up instruments thing and pull off some sweet solos on his Fender Telecaster. As Wilco fans well know, Glenn Kotche is an extremely entertaining drummer no matter what song, but especially and obviously on “Heavy Metal Drummer.”

I was closer to the band, right up to the stage, than at any show before, and it made a difference in really appreciating John Stirratt's fluid AF basswork. It's easy to overlook keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen since he's behind the others and stoically goes about his embellishing business, but what he contributes is paramount.

Making its tour debut as it hasn’t been played since early 2020 (pre-pandemic), was A Ghost is Born’s “Hummingbird.” I’ve noticed that they’ve performed this song at every North Carolina show of theirs since the 2000s (it even appeared at a Tweedy solo shows in the state).

I have a theory about this. Since the mid aughts when the song entered their sets, a young girl named Lilac Rain joined them on stage to sing the song’s chorus and a few times even danced with Tweedy. She made this cameo appearance more than a handful of times at their NC gigs, so much that Tweedy told Lilac that “You own the song.”

As Rain grew into an adult, these appearances faded, but my belief is that Tweedy wants to keep the mini-tradition alive, and maybe summon the spirit or actual presence of Lilac yet again. When she came of age, the young woman may have left the Wilco connection behind, but I hope not as it would be great to see her join the band onstage to sing “Hummingbird” again.

Otherwise it was very satisfying to experience such favorites of mine as the Whole Love songs “Art of Almost,” and “Dawned On Me” do their stunning stuff; as well as the crisply beautiful “If I Ever Was a Child” from Schmilco, and the pop powerhouse “Theologians” live once more.

One song that no Wilco show of the last 20 years would be without is the YHF song “I’m the Man Who Loves You.” The up tempo ballad, which is dedicated to Tweedy's wife, Susie, is most performed song in their entire catalog (well over a thousand airings). Some fans complain that its been over-played, but I have long enjoyed its sharp piercing guitar lines, and playful lyrics.

It’s nice to see that Tweedy and Company break out at least one song from A.M., their 1995 debut, “Box Full of Letters” at these current concerts, but it begs the question: where is any material from their 1996 breakthrough, Being There? Another tour debut, A Ghost is Born’s “The Late Greats,” was broken out during the encore, which was capped off by the crowd-pleasing sing-a-long “California Stars.”

The consistently funny Tweedy constantly fiddling with his fogged-up glasses may not be his most successful between song banter, but it was still amusingly in character as was his noting that the former junkyard made him feel like he’s in “Fat Albert’s band.” He also made a point of telling the audience that they should just pretend that the band left the stage before coming back the encore so that they could save time.

I don’t know if this was up there with the best Wilco shows I’ve seen, but it was damn good. It reminded me of why I love this band, and also why I wrote my book about their music, Wilcopedia (in case you’re not sure what this blog is about). They definitely are worth a long drive, one that I’m sure I’ll be making again in, with hope, the near future.
