Wednesday Wilco Song(s) Spotlight: “Red-Eyed And Blue” & “I Got You”

Since I missed the last couple of Wednesday Wilco Song Spotlights, Im presenting two tracks this week, but they are ones that many fans think are the same song. “Red-Eyed And Blue” and “I Got You (At the End of the Century),” from Wilco's 1996 double record Being There are usually attached especially as “Red-Eyed often seques into “I Got You. But they have been played separately as I discuss below.

“Red-Eyed And Blue” (Jeff Tweedy)

“I Got You (At The End Of The Century)” had been played over two dozen times before it gained the song that would that would function as its prologue for most of its subsequent live airings. Like many of the songs on Being There, both songs were road-tested at numerous gigs during the band’s heavy touring phase in the mid-90s.

“Red-Eyed And Blue” seemingly details the mindset of a broken-down musician who’s drugged up and frustrated in the studio because he can’t quite capture how much he misses his absent lover on tape. Or at least that’s one interpretation, being that there are only twelve somewhat vague lines in the song, but the music fills in the real story between those lines. It ends with a piano figure that is repeated as a guitar riff in the opening of “I Got You,” then built upon as the song explodes into being.

A live version of the song, performed by Tweedy and Bennett at C’Est What in Toronto, Canada, on November 20, 1996, appears on Alpha Mike Foxtrot, but there it doesn’t lead into “I Got You,” even though it did at the show in question. ‘I Got You” appears on another disc in the four-CD set, in all its All Over The Place glory, proving that the two songs can stand alone.

“I Got You (At the End of the Century)” (Jeff Tweedy)

This harmonized rocker, which could be taken as a call out for love amid fears about the impending Y2K, appears on the first disc of the double-CD edition of Being There (or side two of the album on vinyl) in an effective segue from the slow-burner ‘Red-Eyed And Blue.” But although the two songs have also been paired together hundreds of times in performance since 1996, ‘I Got You made its live debut a year before ‘Red-Eyed And Blue,” at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 28, 1995.

Apart from its appearance on Being There, ‘I Got You” is also on the 1996 promo-only ten-inch EP All Over The Place (pictured below) What the liner notes refer to as the ‘Shakey’s Pizza” version was recorded live to DAT on July 9 at the Lounge Ax in Chicago. This same version also appears on Alpha Mike Foxtrot.

In 2012, Wilco recorded a new, stripped-down version of ‘I Got You,” very similar to the All Over The Place cut, for the soundtrack of Judd Apatow’s autobiographical comedy This Is 40. A few years later, the bonus disc of outtakes included with Being There (Deluxe Edition) offered two further versions of ‘I Got You.” The first is an interestingly orchestrated alternate take; the second is labeled ‘Dobro Mix Warzone.” This take has a rawer feel and a very loose structure but somehow holds together.

Wilco setlists: Tulsa 10/22 & Irving 10/23

Okay, so Wilco has been playing very similar setlists this fall on their Ode to Joy tour, but, as John Travolta’s Vincent Vega said in PULP FICTION, “It’s the little differences.” For example, “Summerteeth, which made its tour debut at the band’s in-store at Grimey’s last weekend, showed up again at Cain’s, and songs like Mermaid Avenue’s “Hesitating Beauty” and Schmilco’s “Someone to Lose” have popped up lately too.

Cain’s Ballroom, Tulsa, OK 10/22/19

“Bright Leaves” / “Before Us” / “Company in My Back” / “War on War” / “One and a Half Stars” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Handshake Drugs” / “At Least That’s What You Said” / “Hummingbird” / “White Wooden Cross” / “Via Chicago” / “Summerteeth” / “Laminated Cat” / “Random Name Generator” / “Reservations” /“We Were Lucky” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Impossible Germany” / “Forget the Flowers” / “Box Full of Letters” / “Everyone Hides” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “Hold Me Anyway”/ “The Late Greats”

Encore: “California Stars”/ “Hesitating Beauty” / “Red Eyed and Blue” / “I Got You (At the End of the Century” / “Outtasite (Outta Mind)”

Wilco setlist: Koka Booth Ampheatre, Cary, NC 10/16/19

*

The show Ive waiting for went down last night at Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary, NC, and it was glorious. It was the first Wilco show Ive been to since October 9, 2017, when I saw them at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, and its the first show of theirs Ive seen since my book, Wilcopedia, was published so I was as psyched as can be.

The new songs off of their newly released album, Ode to Joy, sounded stellar, and they were beautifully sprinkled around a choice collection of their classics. Somehow they got away without playing two of their biggest crowd-pleasers - Jesus, Etc. and A Shot in the Arm, without me noticing until shortly after the show was over.

Oh yeah, the shows opening act, Soccer Mommy, was pretty damn good too. Ill have to check out her records.

Anyway, heres what Wilco played last night in Cary:

“Bright Leaves”
“Before Us”
“I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”
“War on War”
“If I Ever Was a Child”
“Handshake Drugs”
“At Least That’s What You Said”
“Either Way”
“Hummingbird”
“White Wooden Cross”
“Via Chicago”
“Laminated Cat”
“Random Name Generator”
“Reservations”
“We Were Lucky”
“Love Is Everywhere (Beware)”
“Impossible Germany”
“Box Full of Letters”
“Everyone Hides”
“Dawned on Me”
“Heavy Metal Drummer”
“I’m the Man Who Loves You”
“Hold Me Anyway”
“Misunderstood”

Encore:

“Red-Eyed and Blue”
“I Got You (At the End of the Century)”
“California Stars”
“The Late Greats”

“Handshake Drugs

Wilco setlists: NYC 10/12 & 10/13

Wilcos Ode to Joy tour hit New York City over the weekend. After playing a reportedly stellar show at the historic Radio City Music Hall, the band was able to share their performance the next night at Brooklyn Steel via a live stream that fans could access via YouTube, Facebook and nugs.tv.

I watched and highly enjoyed the show, and made note of a few comments by Front man Jeff Tweedy which I included below.

Radio City Music Hall, NYC 10/12/19

“Bright Leaves” / “Before Us” / “I am Trying to Break Your Heart” / “War on War” / “One and a Half Stars” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Handshake Drugs” / “At Least That’s What You Said” / “Hummingbird” / “White Wooden Cross” / “Via Chicago” / “How to Fight Loneliness” / “Bull Black Nova” / “Random Name Generator” / “Reservations” / “We Were Lucky” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Impossible Germany” / “Box Full of Letters” / “Everyone Hides” / Jesus, Etc.” / “Theologians”/ “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “Hold Me Anyway” / “Misunderstood”

Encore:

“California Stars” / “The Late Greats”

Brooklyn Steel, Brooklyn, NY 10/13/19

“Bright Leaves” / “Before Us” / “Company in My Back” / “War on War” / “One and a Half Stars” / “Handshake Drugs” / “You and I” / “Hummingbird”

“That’s very nice singing, thank you very much. Made last night’s audience look like a bunch of stiffs.”

“Someone to Lose”

“This is a song…I’ll just leave it there.”

“White Wooden Cross” / “Via Chicago” / “Laminated Cat (Not For the Season)” / “Random Name Generator” / “On and On and On” / “We Were Lucky” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)”

“The nice thing about putting a new record out, is that people say nice things about your old records. Schmilco’s not so bad is it?”

“Impossible Germany”

(Torwards lead guitarist Nels Cline after the song's epic conclusion): “My hat is off.”

“Box Full of Letters”/ “Everyone Hides” / “I’m Always in Love” / “Heavy Metal Drummer” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “Hold Me Anyway” / “Misunderstood”

Encore:

“This is a song, that’s on our record Ode to Joy - it’s a song about when you dream about things that really happened. I dreamt one time about cocaine on a copying machine, and I realized that I used to work at a liquor store and when things would get really busy the owner would put cocaine on the copying machine for the stock boys. And then it got mixed up with things that weren’t real in my dreams, but I woke up wanting cocaine, and I didn’t have any. And that’s the best part of the story I suppose.”

“An Empty Corner”

“Red-Eyed and Blue” / “I Got You (At the End 0f the Century” / “Outtasite (Outta Mind)” / “I’m a Wheel”

The show is available to watch on YouTube for the time being.

Schoolkids Records hosts Wilcopedia event

A few days ago, on Friday, October 11, Schoolkids Records in Raleigh hosted an event for my book, Wilcopedia: A Comprehensive Guide to the Music of Americas Best Band. I was joined by Doug MacMillan, lead singer for the local power pop legends, the Connells, who moderated the reading/signing.

The evening was made fairly lively by Bill Sullivan, former tour manager for the Replacements among other bands (Soul Asylum, Bright Eyes, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, The New Pornographers, Spoon, and Jimmie Vaughan). Sullivan asked a lot of questions during the Q & A, including a few that stumped me, or at least caught me off guard - like, What was your diet while writing the book? Heres a picture of Sullivan and I:

Anyway it was a fun time in which I sold some books, met some cool people, and gained some more confidence talking in front of a group of folks. I look forward to more events - stay tuned to this space for info about future engagements.

Thanks to Schoolkids for having me come and talk Wilcopedia - it was a blast. And now, Ill leave you with this photo taken inside the restroom by my friend, Anthony Rhodes:

Wilco's show at Brooklyn Steel to stream live tonight

Wilco's sold out show at Brooklyn Steel will stream live tonight at 8:30 pm. Folks can access the concert via YouTube, Facebook and nugs.tv.

This is Jeff Tweedy and co.'s first performance at the 1,800-capacity Brooklyn, NY, venue which opened in 2017.

listeners can expect a healthy amount of songs from Wilco's newly released record, Ode to Joy, which dropped on Oct. 4th. Some fans have complained about the sameness of the setlists on this tour, but for those who are only attending one show, the band appears to be offering up a nice mix of new and old material.

One thing's for sure, tonight's broadcast will psych me up for Wilco's show at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary, NC, on Wednesday night, Oct. 16. That can't come soon enough.

Wilco setlists: Boston 10/10 & 10/11

Over the last few days, Wilco performed a two-night engagement at Boston's Boch Center Wang Theatre to kick off their North American tour in support of their newest album, Ode to Joy. Reportedly there were some technical difficulties involving loss of sound that resulted in the band aborting “Everyone Hides” (they returned to it later in the set).

Despite these hiccups, both night's setlists are pretty damn epic (and the poster print for the shows above is pretty damn killer too:

Mad Men & Wilco: That's Right, There Are Connections

What does the acclaimed AMC show Mad Men (2007-2015) have to do with the acclaimed rock band Wilco? Well, let me tell you. First, we’ll start with Mad Men’s star, Jon Hamm, who plays ad exec Don Draper. Hamm has said in interviews that he’s a big fan of Wilco, as well as Son Volt and their antecedent, Uncle Tupelo.

In 2009, Hamm submitted a playlist for iTune’s “Celebrity Playlists” that included the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot track “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.” He provided commentary for the track: “This is my favorite song from my favorite band. Hands down. There are a lot of things Wilco does well, and they do all of them on this song.”

Hamm also picked Uncle Tupelo’s “Screen Door,” of which he said, “There is a simplicity to this song (and this song) that disguises its innovation and depth. The fact that this band produced two equally kickass bands is testament to just that.”

Over the years, Hamm has had a number of other connections to his favorite band. Wilco’s “A Shot in the Arm” appeared in the 2011 film, FRIENDS WITH KIDS, in which Hamm co-starred with Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, and Jennifer Westfeldt.

Hamm posted a video via Twitter in 2016 in which he encouraged his internet audience to go to their local independent record store to listen to Wilco’s album Schmilco. You can watch the video here.

In 2018, the actor moderated “Let
s Go - A discussion of music and other topics with Jeff Tweedy and Jon Hamm,” during which Hamm admitted to being a Wilco groupie.

But Hamm’s piece de resistance has to be earlier this year when he appeared at the Solid Sound Festival to perform a piece entitled “Fishing” aided by Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche.

Hamm’s co-star, John Slattery, who portrays Draper’s collegue, Roger Sterling, has also often extolled the virtues of Tweedy and company. He also posted an iTunes playlist which contained two Wilco tunes: “You and I,” of which he wrote, “just saw the song sung live at the Wiltern, and it was like I was the only one there. Is that weird?”

“Impossible Germany” was Slattery’s second choice: “I always wondered if this lyric came from a list of tour dates. Impossible: Germany; unlikely: Japan. Nels Cline is amazing.”

Also notable in the world of Roger Sterling, there’s a moment In the fourth episode (broadcast: August 9, 2007) of Mad Men, in which Roger, Senior Partner at the ficticious ad firm Sterling Cooper, ponders that, ‘I don’t know, maybe every generation thinks the next one is the end of it all.’

In Wilco’s ‘You Never Know,’ the first single off of Wilco (The Album), Jeff Tweedy sings a similar sentiment: “Come on children / You’re acting like children / Every generation thinks it’s the end of the world.”

In Time Magazine (August 24, 2009), Slattery praised Tweedy and companys then newest release:

Wilco (The Album) is another brilliant offering from the best band in the biz. They take the poetry of lead singer Jeff Tweedy and make it rock. They never repeat themselves, and they take chances. They’re students of music and sound and poetry.”

Elisabeth Moss, who portrayed secretary-turned-copywriter Peggy, also posted a playlist alongside Hamm and Slattery’s that contained a few Wilco songs. Sadly though it’s been removed by iTunes so I can’t tell you what they were. If anybody knows, please drop me a line.

That’s all for now. I’m going to go see if I can make any other connections between Wilco and TV shows.
