Wilco’s Homecoming In Chicago Features Sleater-Kinney’s Last Show On The Tour

Last night’s “It’s Time” tour show was a homecoming in Chicago at the Millennium Park Pritzker Pavilion with Wilco, and supporting acts NNAMDÏ and Sleater-Kinney, pumping the audience up with their audio hijinks (sorry, I’ll never say ‘audio hijinks’ again).

The concert (Sleater-Kinney and Wilco’s sets) was live streamed on nug.net, so many were able to join in on the experience, which was notable as it was Sleater-Kinney’s last performance on the tour. I was happy to see one of the 16 shows that they played. They are a perfect opening band for Wilco, as they have a body of strong songs and are a blast to watch bounce around the stage.

Guitarist/singer Carrie Brownstein addressed this early in their set:

“This is our last night of tour with and Wilco and we have to say we’re quite sad to end it but what we have been so happy about, and what has been truly a joy is getting to play live music again. For how many of you, is this your first show back? Well, on behalf of all three bands, we want to say thank you. We have missed this as performers, we miss it as fans – just this ability to communicate and commune with all of you in moments that are spontaneous and extemporized. So thank you for being a part of it tonight in Chicago.”

I haven’t covered every set by Sleater-Kinney, but since this is their last on this tour, here’s how they ended this excursion:

“High in the Grass” / “Hurry On Home” / “Price Tag” / “Down the Line” / “Jumpers” / “Shadow Town” / “Can I Go On” / “What’s Mine is Yours” / “Path of Wellness” / “A New Wave” / “Method”/ “Complex Female Characters” / “Surface Envy” / “Modern Girl” / “Bring Mercy” / “The Fox” / “Worry With You” / “One Beat” * / “Entertain”

Brownstein’s comedy co-star on the IFC program Portlandia, Feed Armisen, helped out on tambourine during “One Beat.” The former SNL performer is also well known to Wilco fans for his appearance in the doc I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART, and also because in the ‘90s he used to work at Chicago’s legendary Lounge Ax, which was co-owned by Jeff Tweedy’s wife, Sue Miller.

After S/K’s set, Wilco took the stage around 8:30pm, and struck up their consistent opener “A Shot in the Arm” but with the help of Brownstein, and Corin Tucker who provided back-up vocals and some awkward half-dancing on the side.

Tweedy appeared to not be very talkative at this show, but did tell the audience at one point: “We missed you. We missed this, we missed that.” He also paid thanks to what he called “an amazing crew,” saying “my amplifier blew up at 2 o’clock today and it’s fixed. That’s amazing! So if you have any amplifiers that need to be fixed, just drop ‘em off at the bottom of the stage here.”

So here’s the meat of the matter:

“A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “At least That’s What You Said” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Via Chicago” / “Art of Almost” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Impossible Germany” / “Hummingbird”/ “Box Full of Letters” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned on Me” / “Jesus, Etc.” / “Theologians” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “Heavy Metal Drummer” / “I’m Always in Love”

Encore: “The Late Greats” / “Outtasite (Outta Mind)”

Next up, the Wonderbus Festival in Columbus, Ohio.

Wilco Setlist: Leader Bank Pavilion, Boston, MA 8/24/21

Official show poster by Dan Black/Landland

Like all of the shows on the “Its Time” tour, Wilco's concert in Boston, MA, last night stood out for a very special reason. Tweedy and company including Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker broke out a cover of The Rolling Stones classic “Honky Tonk Women” in tribute to Stones drummer Charlie Watts who passed away early that day at the age of 80.

The Stones music is certainly part of Wilco's DNA as they've previously covered “Dead Flowers,” and have several songs, particularly on their first few albums, A.M. and Being There, that owe greatly to the tunes of Englands Oldest Hitmakers.

Check out Wilco's rendition of “Honky Tonk Women”:

“A Shot in the Arm”

“Random Name Generator”

“At Least That’s What You Said”

“Love Is Everywhere (Beware)”

“I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”

“Art of Almost”

“If I Ever Was a Child”

“Impossible Germany”

“Hummingbird”

“Box Full of Letters”

“Everyone Hides”

“Born Alone”

“Jesus, Etc.”

“Theologians”

“I’m the Man Who Loves You”

“Heavy Metal Drummer”

“I’m Always in Love”

“Honky Tonk Women”

“The Late Greats”

“California Stars”

Next up: Thompsons Point, Portland, ME 8/25/21 & later this week, Wilcos show at Millennium Park Pritzker Pavilion, Chicago on 8/28 will be live streamed on nugs.net.

Review & Setlist: Wilco @ Asheville, NC 8/19/21

“Asheville, finally!” Jeff Tweedy remarked early into Wilco’s show at the odd venue, Salvage Station, last night. Tweedy was referring to this event being originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 17, but Tropical Storm Fred had other ideas.

Despite a hard rain shower in the afternoon, the skies were largely clear by the time the doors opened at 5pm, and thankfully rain-free for the rest of the evening. A repurposed junkyard, Salvage Station, with its gravel-based grounds, was definitely the least fancy, most grotty locale where I’ve ever seen Wilco perform. Don’t get me wrong, it was a cool place to see a show, and had a nice assortment of food trucks and booze booths around a circular walkway.

At 6pm, Wilco’s first opening act, NNAMDÏ (formerly known as Nnamdi Ogbonnaya), took the stage with his backing band, and preceded to win over the audience with his melodic blend of hip-hop, reggae, and jazz.

NNAMDÏ hails from Chicago, but while being in Wilco’s orbit was a factor in his addition to this tour, I bet it was more because he’s a masterful multi-instrumentalist with a bounty of solid songs. I must explore this artist further.

Next up, Sleater-Kinney, a band I’ve highly enjoy through their albums and a few live shows through the years. Fronted by guitarists/vocalists Carrie Brownstein, and Corin Tucker, the group tore through a full set of punk thrashers mostly from their latest album, Path of Wellness (which I have to pick up). To say that Sleater-Kinney was well received would be an understatement as I witnessed a crowd full of frantically dancing, and pogoing gig-goers.

Now onto the meat of the matter: Wilco’s headlining set, which began at 8:30pm. Like all the previous concerts on the “It’s Time” tour, they opened with “A Shot in the Arm” from their classic third album, Summerteeth. Despite its origin in the late ‘90s, the song is timelier than ever for obvious reasons. It was a great, rich tune to kick off their set, and was followed by a just as lush rendition of a newer song, “Random Name Generator” from 2015’s Star Wars.

While fans have complained about the sameness of the setlists on this excursion, the third selection is one that they’ve mixed it up – at least a little with “Side with the Seeds” rotating with “At Least That’s What You Said.”
This show featured an intense stomping version of the latter, and I was more than fine with that as I prefer “At Least” to “Side.”

Wilco’s most recent record, Ode to Joy, was touched upon throughout the show with the understated yet touchingly tuneful tracks “One and a Half Stars,” “Love is Everywhere,” and “Everyone Hides.” As I’ve noted here before, Wilco’s landmark 2002 album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, is getting as much, or some nights more of a spotlight than 2019’s Ode, which may be a case of giving the people what they want.

A regular highlight of Wilco’s performances, the Sky Blue Sky epic staple “Impossible Germany,” was given a blazing workout by lead guitarist Nels Cline, who is delightful to watch shredding up a storm that entranced the collective crowd. If anything was worth the four-hour drive to Asheville, it was this.

It was also a lot fun to watch Pat Sansone do his switching up instruments thing and pull off some sweet solos on his Fender Telecaster. As Wilco fans well know, Glenn Kotche is an extremely entertaining drummer no matter what song, but especially and obviously on “Heavy Metal Drummer.”

I was closer to the band, right up to the stage, than at any show before, and it made a difference in really appreciating John Stirratt's fluid AF basswork. It's easy to overlook keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen since he's behind the others and stoically goes about his embellishing business, but what he contributes is paramount.

Making its tour debut as it hasn’t been played since early 2020 (pre-pandemic), was A Ghost is Born’s “Hummingbird.” I’ve noticed that they’ve performed this song at every North Carolina show of theirs since the 2000s (it even appeared at a Tweedy solo shows in the state).

I have a theory about this. Since the mid aughts when the song entered their sets, a young girl named Lilac Rain joined them on stage to sing the song’s chorus and a few times even danced with Tweedy. She made this cameo appearance more than a handful of times at their NC gigs, so much that Tweedy told Lilac that “You own the song.”

As Rain grew into an adult, these appearances faded, but my belief is that Tweedy wants to keep the mini-tradition alive, and maybe summon the spirit or actual presence of Lilac yet again. When she came of age, the young woman may have left the Wilco connection behind, but I hope not as it would be great to see her join the band onstage to sing “Hummingbird” again.

Otherwise it was very satisfying to experience such favorites of mine as the Whole Love songs “Art of Almost,” and “Dawned On Me” do their stunning stuff; as well as the crisply beautiful “If I Ever Was a Child” from Schmilco, and the pop powerhouse “Theologians” live once more.

One song that no Wilco show of the last 20 years would be without is the YHF song “I’m the Man Who Loves You.” The up tempo ballad, which is dedicated to Tweedy's wife, Susie, is most performed song in their entire catalog (well over a thousand airings). Some fans complain that its been over-played, but I have long enjoyed its sharp piercing guitar lines, and playful lyrics.

It’s nice to see that Tweedy and Company break out at least one song from A.M., their 1995 debut, “Box Full of Letters” at these current concerts, but it begs the question: where is any material from their 1996 breakthrough, Being There? Another tour debut, A Ghost is Born’s “The Late Greats,” was broken out during the encore, which was capped off by the crowd-pleasing sing-a-long “California Stars.”

The consistently funny Tweedy constantly fiddling with his fogged-up glasses may not be his most successful between song banter, but it was still amusingly in character as was his noting that the former junkyard made him feel like he’s in “Fat Albert’s band.” He also made a point of telling the audience that they should just pretend that the band left the stage before coming back the encore so that they could save time.

I don’t know if this was up there with the best Wilco shows I’ve seen, but it was damn good. It reminded me of why I love this band, and also why I wrote my book about their music, Wilcopedia (in case you’re not sure what this blog is about). They definitely are worth a long drive, one that I’m sure I’ll be making again in, with hope, the near future.

The Setlist:

“A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “At Least That’s What You Said” / “One and a Half Stars” / “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” / “Art of Almost” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Impossible Germany” / “Love Is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Box Full of Letters” / “Hummingbird” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned On Me” / “Jesus, Etc.” / “Theologians” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “Heavy Metal Drummer” / “I’m Always in Love”

Encore: “The Late Greats” / “California Stars”

Wilco’s “It’s Time” Summer 2021 tour was back on in full after the previous night in Kansas City being rained out. They hit Saint Louis Music Park. in Maryland Heights in St, Louis, Missouri last night with their support acts, NNAMDï and Sleater-Kinney, intact, a solid set in that contained the tour debut of “Casino Queen,” and maybe my favorite poster print so far of this current excursion.

A Kansas City Washout Doesn't Stop Wilco From Putting On A Show

Wilco’s shot at Grinder’s in Kansas City, MO, was rained out last night, but that didn’t prevent the band from performing even if it was a truncated set on Instagram in their backstage dressing room. After both of their opening acts (NNAMDï and Skeeter-Kinney) played mini-sets because of the stormy conditions, Jeff Tweedy and Company were told that their show had to be scrapped, with Tweedy addressing their fans:

“We’re in Kansas City, and things are looking pretty bleak outside. There are storms rolling through, as we say in our crew – there’s been cloud to ground lightning. And that’s not good. Looks. Like there’s more storms heading our way so we thought we’d play some songs from the dressing room just in the off chance we don’t get to play any onstage which I kinda don’t think we’re gonna get to play any onstage. Thanks you for tuning in, and I hope this settles the score.”

Then they played this short but very sweet setlist:

“A Shot in the Arm” / “Impossible Germany” / “Either Way” / “Theologians” / “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” / “Everyone Hides” / “Ashes of American Flags” / “I’m Always in Love”

You can watch Wilcos Backstage settlement here on Instragram though Im not sure how long it will be included on the site.

Wilco & Sleater-Kinney Rocked Red Rocks And Nugs.net Captured It All

Last night, Wilco returned to the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, to play the venue for the nineth time since 1997. But their support act, Sleater-Kinney, was performing there for the first time as the band’s co-leader Carrie Brownstein noted up front.

Happily, fans were able to watch the show courtesy of nugs.net, a streaming service that hosts thousands of full-length concerts livestreams, downloads, CDs, etc. Nugs broadcast both of Sleater-Kinney and Wilco’s full sets, and they were a blast to watch.

I did get a bit jealous at the folks who were there in person to experience these brilliant bands on the same stage that’s hosted everyone from The Beatles to Jimi Hendrix to The Grateful Dead to U2 to Insane Clown Posse to…okay, you get the idea (Steve Martin even recorded his stand-up for his 1978 album, A Wild and Crazy Guy, but again you get the idea).

Sleater-Kinney opened with an incredibly enjoyable 19-song set that was heavy on tracks from their latest album, Path of Wellness, which I really need to pick up. I’ve seen Sleater-Kinney before and knew that they could deliver the goods, but this is the first show of theirs I’ve seen since drummer Janet Weiss left the band. Weiss’ drumming was indeed missed, but Brownstein and Corin Tucker are plowing forward admirably and the group’s sound is still largely intact.

I normally don’t include the setlists of bands who open for Wilco, but since they were part of the livestream package, here’s what Sleater-Kinney played.

“Path of Wellness” / “High in the Grass” / “Hurry on Home” / “Price Tag” / “Down the Line” / “What’s Mine is Yours” / “Can I Go on” / “Shadow Town” / “Worry With You” / “Reach Out” / “Jumpers” / “Bring Mercy” / “Bury Our Friends” / “Complex Female Characters” / “Surface Envy” / “Modern Girl” / “A New Wave” / “One Beat” / “Entertain”

Now, onto the tunes that Jeff Tweedy and Company laid down at the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre:

“A Shot in the Arm” / “Random Name Generator” / “Side With the Seeds” / “One and a Half Stars” / “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” / “Art of Almost” / “If I Ever Was a Child” / “Impossible Germany” / “Love is Everywhere (Beware)” / “Box Full of Letters” / “Everyone Hides” / “Dawned on Me” / “Jesus, Etc.” / “Theologians” / “I’m the Man Who Loves You” / “What Light” / “Heavy Metal Drummer” / “I’m Always in Love” / “Outtasite (Outta Mind)”

Encore: “Ashes of American Flags” / “California Stars”

Wilco/Sleater-Kinney @ Red Rocks Livestreams Tonight

This evening, Wilco and Sleater-Kinney’s show at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, will be livestreamed via nugs.net. This is the fourth show in the bands’ current tour, both returning to the road after a year and change of covid, of course.

You can tune in to the powerhouse pop stylings of Sleater-Kinney, and their pals Wilco at nugs.net. There is an admission price though. That kind of threw me as I’ve watched many a Wilco show for free over the years. I guess these are different times.

From the nugs.net website: “Watch live or whenever you can. Despite being billed as a “one night only virtual event,” this concert’s tickets include 48-hours of On-Demand viewing after pressing play.”

Alright! Sounds good. I’ll be catching up on Starship Casual while I wait for this epic event.

Wilco Setlists: Montana 8/7 & Utah 8/8

Okay, we’re back! Wilco’s return to the road hit a few fine venues in Bonner, Montana, and Salt Lake City, Utah over the weekend. Folks wondering if Jeff Tweedy and company were going to change-up the setlist got their answer with a few songs entering the mix. Looks like the rotating tunes will favor their last album, Ode to Joy, but that may be too soon to call. Still no Being There yet.

One thing I failed to mention in my last post is that Sleater-Kinney is opening for Wilco on this tour. They are one of my favorites so I am really looking forward to seeing them next week in Asheville. I won't be covering their setlists here but you can find some of them at setlist.fm.
